I recall my very first time at writing my resume and how I thought this was easy. Just list my experiences and some background information and I would be hired in a heartbeat. How wrong was I? Did I get hired right away – unfortunately not! But we all knew that was a mistake on the part of that organization as I was the best there was out there, or so I thought! Maybe so, but I had failed in marketing myself through my resume. So why was that?
I have used a number of different resume templates with varying degrees of success. The format or template of the resume is very important. How you frame the content is equally as important as well. Having reviewed many resumes in my career I can certainly recall the few that captured my attention and had me wanting to know more about that person.
I recently worked with a person that I was job coaching/mentoring who was using a resume template that was not advancing them to the interview stage at all. As part of their job hunt a rather significant number of applications had been sent off using this format resulting in absolutely no calls for interviews. So, it was time for some changes and we move the information from the current template to one that I recommended. Within two weeks my protégé had five (5) interviews and ended up securing a position.
If you have not been getting any “hits” on your current resume, then you should take a look at a number of things. One of those would most definitely be the resume template that you are using.
